Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
