Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
